OUR STORY · TITHAVLI, KONKAN
We came home.
And began to build.
A family, a field of lemongrass, and a belief that something of lasting value could be made in Konkan.

DILIP & GAURI PARAB · FOUNDERS
A different kind of ambition.
Before Sugandha, our work was in software. But the question that stayed with us was closer to home: what could we build in Konkan that would create opportunity here?
We are Dilip and Gauri Parab. House of Sugandha is our answer, still taking shape—a fragrance house rooted in the land, the work and the people of this region on India’s western coast.

01 / THE DECISION
The road home was not a straight line.
Our wish to create opportunity in Konkan began before Sugandha. In 2008, we started Yuvalakshya, an initiative teaching coding skills to young people in the region. A software venture followed. Infrastructure challenges brought that chapter to a close; photography and Paithani clothing became other parts of our journey.
Each venture changed how we thought about building a business. The question endured: how could the skills we had gained become useful in the place we called home?
Eventually, that question brought us to the land.

02 / THE FIRST PLANT
Lemongrass gave us a beginning.
We began with lemongrass: growing it, harvesting it and learning to extract its aromatic oil through steam distillation. The work connected us to something very immediate—the relationship between a crop, a season and the oil it yields.
There were harvests to understand, equipment to learn and batches to improve. Progress came through doing the work, then returning to do it better.
That first crop remains at the heart of Sugandha. It is where our understanding of fragrance began.

03 / FROM CROP TO CRAFT
A harvest can become much more.
Distilling oil opened another possibility: creating finished products here, with a character of their own. Lemongrass essential oil led us towards soaps, home fragrance and everyday rituals.
Growing, distilling, making, packing and serving customers each require different skills. Bringing these activities together is central to what we are building in Konkan.
A bar of soap may be a small object. Behind it is a much longer story of people learning to make something well.

04 / THE PEOPLE
The work belongs here.
Sugandha is built with people from Konkan. Our local team works across the farm, distillation, soap making, packing and customer care. Their hands and growing experience are part of the house we are creating.
For us, building a business here means creating paid work and practical skills here. It means developing the ability to take an idea from the field to a finished product.
Our responsibility grows with the business: to the people doing the work, and to the customers placing their trust in it.
05 / A WIDER FRAGRANT WORLD
Lemongrass was the beginning.
Our exploration now reaches towards chafa, mogra, vetiver and patchouli, and towards fragrances inspired by life in Konkan: a flower near the house, rain arriving on a veranda, the familiar scent of a family cupboard.
We work with both our own lemongrass oil and sourced aromatic materials as we develop this next chapter. Each material brings something different; learning how to work with it is part of the craft.
The aim is to create fragrances with a sense of place—ones that invite curiosity, stir a memory and become part of someone’s everyday life.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
A place you can know
through its fragrance.
We are building Sugandha Ghar as a place to encounter the aromatic world behind our products: flowers, leaves, roots, woods and resins. A place to smell, ask questions and discover how a plant becomes part of a fragrance.
Our roots are in Konkan. Our ambition is to share its fragrant possibilities with the world.
